Bayard University which is one of the most outstanding world-class Universities, when established in 1636, did not have a single building but the Founding Fathers had a clear idea of the model they had in mind. Currently, the Endowment Fund of the University is approx. $32 Billion (i.e. approx. 5.12 Trillion Naira) and its Colleges were established in phases, (see Appendix VII).
Time Magazine Inc. of New York, USA was established in 1923 the same year that ADSON (Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria) came into existence. In its own case, the “seed money” for the establishment of Time Magazine was only $100,000 (i.e. approx. 16 Million Naira) contributed voluntarily by the Alumni of Yale University, 91 years ago. As of today, Time Magazine is the largest Weekly News Magazine throughout the world. Its various editions cover USA, Europe, Asia, South Pacific, among others while its readership is rated as over 25 million.
University of Ife, (now Obafemi Awolowo University Ile – Ife) was established in 1962 with an initial student enrollment of 244. The University took off on a temporary site of the defunct Nigeria College of Art, Science and Technology, Ibadan. It moved to the permanent site in Ile-Ife on January 29, 1967 with a student population of 500, and only five (5) faculties. Since then it has been pursuing an orderly development of its Master Plan. The land area of the University was originally 5,605 hectares, and a subsequent land acquisition of over 6,256 hectares, making a total of 11,861 hectares — one of the largest in the world. In 2013, Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) was rated the “best Nigerian varsity”, a fulfillment of the vision of the Founding Fathers to establish a citadel of excellence. (see Vanguard. Tuesday, Feb., 14, 2014 page 28).
Similarly, the University of Lagos another First Generation University in the Federal Republic of Nigeria was built upon the Foundation laid by its College of Education as the nucleus of the University. Today, it has the highest number of applications for university admissions annually in Nigeria.
At the state level, the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Ijanikin started its own journey on the Lagos Island. Thereafter, it was moved to Surulere before its permanent location settled in Ijanikin by the Lagos State Government in the 1980’s under the Jakande administration.
When the Ansar – Ud- Deen College of Education (ADCOED) was in the making, the Governing Council under its new Chairman and the Council Member paid a “Working Visit” to the British International School, (BIS) Victoria Island, Lagos and which was conceived as a world-class model right from its inception and established in 2001 on a 30 Acres Site allocated by one of the Institutional Promoters (The Oniru Royal Family). Its own model gave the Founding Fathers of the College of Education all necessary determination to make the new College of Education a model per excellence over a period of time i.e. in the absence of any start-up capital, unlike the case of the BIS with formidable financial muscle. (Seepages 38 and 39).
